The New York Method is Pilates training as Joseph himself taught it. Unadorned, unorthodox and highly effective, it is characterised by these principles:
Centering: All movement is anchored by the ‘Powerhouse’ - the muscles around the pelvis, abdomen and lower back which stabilise the whole body.
Control: Known as ‘body/mind’ training, Pilates draws much of its power from an unexpected source; the mind. Every movement and breath is intentional.
Breathing: As important as the movement itself, disciplined breathing enlivens the body with oxygen and creates an underlying rhythm for the session.
Concentration: This gives us acute body awareness and total body control.
Precision: Accuracy of movement is far more important than repetition.
Flow: Each session flows like a dance, from beginning to end.
